S: Examined Miniholes and Minihighs over Switzerland from 1980 to 1989. Focus on events with very high or very low total ozone values, which they refer as miniholes and minihighs. Synoptic sclae regions charaterized by total column ozone values below/above a certain threshold, that is typically more than 100 DU above or below the climatological mean. They showed that both types of events can be interpreted as dynamically induced by directly relating the negative/positive ozone deviations in the column to changes in ozone mixing ratio due to different origins of the air masses. The pressure changes of the isentropes cannot sufficiently explain minihole nor minihigh formation. Certain isentropes, mainly near 500-530K are slightly lifted/lowered compared to average pressure levels, but the magnitude of this effet is too small (less than 5%) to explain ozone changes in the order of 50%.

T: On the Ozone mini hole over Europe on 14th February 2001

S: Have examined a OMH over Baltic Sea (14 th February 2001).They found strong anticorrelation between air temperature on the isobric surface below 500hPa and TOC over Europe in February. They found strong positive correlation between air temperature on the isobaric surfaces below 500hPa and TOC. Warm troposphere and cold stratosphere were observed when OMH occured. Physical meaning of the warm troposphere and cold stratosphere accompanied by OMH is that the descent of isentropic surfaces below 300K and the assent of isentropic surface 330K. Low ozone mixing ratio and low potential vorticity air originated in low latitudes (and covered the aera where OMH occured) appaered on the 300, 330 and 350K isentropic surfaces. High potential vorticity air on the isentropic surfaces higher than 450K This shows that the air origniated from high latitude covered on these isentropic surfaces

S: They have analysedin detail one of the two reported extreme low ozone events over Madrid (10.Jan 2004 + 4.March 2004). The January event was 25DU below the historical minimum above Spain. The found that this event developed fast through a combined effect of tropical transport and very fast uplifting in the hours previous arriving to Spain. Radiosounding profile shows very cold temperatures of -76°C at 70hPa associated to a high tropical tropopause, well above the mid-latitude tropopause. Ozone remained below 2mPa up to this level. While these events seems to be associated to the phase of the NAO, a correlation analysis with low ozone events is not capable in explaining any significant portion of the variance neither the increasing trends in the number of cases.
